About House of Hackney
House of Hackney, a British interior design and lifestyle brand, is renowned for its eclectic and vibrant style. A B Corp-certified company, they are interested in not just ‘sustaining’ but actively making things better. In 2023, they started on a journey to learn how they can become a measurably regenerative company.
Founded over a decade ago, the brand offers a wide range of products, including wallpapers, fabrics, furniture, and home accessories, all reflecting a deep commitment to craftsmanship and creativity – an approach they have also applied to their regenerative business strategy.
Deep Understanding
Driven by a commitment to harmonise their company impacts with Nature (including human wellbeing), House of Hackney continually seeks innovative ways to evolve its business. That is why they reached out to Eight Versa to help them review their decarbonisation strategy so far and look at ways it can be enhanced for greater impact. Our carbon footprinting experts worked closely with them to gain a deep understanding of where they were, and where they want to be. It was clear from the outset that we needed a more comprehensive view of their value chain, and that this would be the central focus of how they can deliver lower carbon production, just one of the factors in how they can reduce their impact on Nature.
Re-baselining
In a bid to elevate its efforts and achieve more accurate carbon reporting, the company took a bold and ambitious step to re-baseline its carbon footprint by undertaking a more complete assessment. Recognising that a substantial portion of emissions come from its supply chain (Scope 3 emissions) as they heavily rely on third-party suppliers, our carbon footprint consultants designed a robust supplier engagement exercise that the company could implement.
The re-baselining effort sought to provide a more holistic and detailed understanding of the company’s overall carbon impact by not only utilising data from direct operations but also incorporating emissions data from key suppliers. Starting with their top suppliers, the engagement was designed to gather primary data directly from these suppliers, ensuring that the footprint calculations reflected actual emissions rather than relying solely on industry averages or estimates.

The supplier engagement exercise involved:
Collaborative Workshops
- Suppliers were engaged in workshops led by our consultants to provide guidance on carbon reporting frameworks, including the GHG Protocol and methods for measuring a carbon footprint.
- Discussions emphasised the importance of carbon footprint measurement and reduction plans in the current business environment.
- Suppliers were provided guidance on data collection and how their data would contribute to the company’s footprint calculations.
Data Collection and Reporting
- A tailored data questionnaire was developed by the Eight Versa team and sent to suppliers to collect emissions information specific to the company’s carbon footprint.
- The questionnaire sought data on: (1) Product or service emissions calculated using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodologies, (2) Supplier-calculated emissions allocated based on economic or physical factors, or (3) Estimated emissions based on resource consumption data.
- Continuous support was provided to suppliers to help them understand and complete the data requirements.
Quality Control and Analysis
- Eight Versa completed rigorous data quality checks to ensure that only reliable and complete data were used in the final carbon footprint calculations. This process aimed to ensure that the re-baselined footprint was both comprehensive and accurate.
Enhancing Credibility
By undertaking this project, House of Hackney set a new standard for its approach to setting targets in line with their ambition to become a measurable regenerative business now and for future generations.
While not all required data was available for the final analysis, the initiative represented a significant first step in enhancing the credibility of House of Hackney’s carbon reporting. This project also fostered stronger collaboration with suppliers, driving collective action towards better data understanding, improved quality, and reduced emissions in the future. House of Hackney further recognises that ongoing supplier engagement is a continuous process that requires consistent effort and a joint commitment to achieve reductions.
Eight Versa also supported in developing a carbon reduction plan that focuses on outcomes from the re-baseline footprint results. The strategic interventions recommended proposed a deeper understanding of material impacts and potential for circular product development. The experts also suggested alternative scenarios and the emissions reduction depending on the pace of transition to various modes of transport, considering that customers purchasing products are in different regions around the world.
House of Hackney’s comprehensive approach underscores its commitment to transparency, accuracy, and long-term impact reduction, playing their part to accelerate climate ambition in the interiors industry.
“The Eight Versa team quickly understood our challenges and provided comprehensive support from the get-go. They not only delivered a robust assessment, but they also took the time to ensure we gained a detailed understanding of our carbon footprint. With a particularly difficult task of engaging our supply chain, they helped us approach this exercise with pragmatism and accuracy so that we can be confident in our decarbonisation plans moving forward.”
